(Here's hoping that this "next generation" Internet is more secure than the first...)

INTERNET II
(To the tune of "Icarus II," from the Kansas album Somewhere to Elsewhere)

In the hub room I stand, windowless domain
I was planning security improvements
But now I see the signs of a hostile ping
And I long for my Pentium stand-alone
Where I'm safe
There I'm safe

But the need is clear, and the threat at hand
And my enemies wait in the ether
Do they fear exposure?  Do they think like us?
And do they hope to stay under their cover
Where they're safe?

Now we're guarding our corporate web sites
Monitoring suspicious events
In a moment we'll upgrade our network
And we'll justify all that we spent

Here the lights are bright, and my plans are clear
And so I'm reviewing all we must do here
For the mayhem that can come from a hacker's attack
Must be thwarted each time 'til it disappears
And we're safe

Now we're watching our corporate web sites
Monitoring invasive attempts
Any moment they'll DoS-bomb our servers
And so justify all that we spent

HERE IT COMES...!

I'm tracing all the packets; sites are going dead
I can see the spoofed addresses
Safety in our firewall; routers flashing red
We're under abnormal stresses

Hacks lurking all around
Nodes going down in flames

And now we're hit; it's happened -- server's compromised
Something's telling me the time is now
In the midst of panic, still I feel at ease
Quickly now, I give the order...

Hey, boys!  Hey!  Upgrade while you can
I'll try to log us on...

I'm logging on...
