(In honor of Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web.)

DISTANT SERVER
(To the tune of "Distant Vision," from the Kansas album Somewhere to Elsewhere)

On a night as I sat searching through disjointed data files
For the information I needed to think
And I saw how inefficient that the program structure was
Now it comes to me to formulate the link

But I'm not just a geek
I know now what I seek
With a concept to unite, I must write

And I will shine the light
And the server logs me onward
That data sources have their sites
And I'd weave a thousand Webs to make it so

To my boss I gave revisions in the hopes that we could build
On the plan of making countless networks one
But the lack of common platforms is standing in our way
Making us rethink what we've now just begun

But I'm not just a geek
I still know what I seek
With the IP as my guide, I will write

And I will lead the fight
And the server logs me onward
That sep'rate networks have their sites
And I'd weave a thousand Webs to make it so

Now a query lingers in my mind
As Web fever furies on
Soon these sites will offer text and links;
My vision for them goes beyond
Log on...

Streaming sound and pictures share the space
E-commerce drives the rising tide
Corporate hand support me now; I pledge to you:
All the world will join the ride...
Web World Wide

And I will see it through
To the sites of the distant addresses
That all the nations log on too
And I'd weave a thousand Webs to make it so
