In September 1999, The Learning Channel aired a two-hour program entitled "Blast Off: True Stories from the Final Frontier." Much of the program's content centered upon the risks inherent in manned spaceflight and featured video footage of space disasters and near-disasters throughout the history of space exploration. One brief part dealt with the role of the heat-resistant tiles covering the surface of the space shuttle and, three-and-a-half years before the fall of Columbia, explored what might happen to a shuttle should these tiles fail during the inferno of reentry. |
